Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology is a way of transmitting telephone calls over the Internet. When the calls are between two Internet telephones, there are no traditional local or long distance telephone costs, no matter where the two people are located. But there are also ways to connect Internet telephones to the regular telephone system, referred to as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Even when this is done, the costs are generally much lower than regular telephone service.
